Babcock Gristmill Grinder Half Marathon

Published by Dan Lehmann at 9:19 pm under Running, MSTR

Spring races can be a surprise weatherwise and Babcock is always suspect in this regard. Unlike the snow and cold of the 1st and 3rd years, this 4th year dealt perfect running conditions. Nevertheless, once the running stopped it was pants and fleece time. Race Director Donnie Hudspeth threw a “new and improved” twist to the course this year by switching the loop around the lake to the end, and the Wilderness Trail with those tedious ups and downs to the beginning. The consensus seemed to be the change was good.

The Grinder is a deceiving course with it’s generally down-grade first half along the Canyon Rim Trail and descent on the old Shea railroad grade along Glade Creek. But once you cross the swinging bridge the gradual climb back to the historic gristmill begins. When the mill and Aid 3 is reached the cheers of family and friends spur you on for the final 3 miles.

Babcock had a record number of participants this year with 72 runners and a dozen or so opting to the 3 mile walk. After awards and give-away prizes many headed for the fine eateries in Fayetteville. Pies and Pints saw a bunch of us eager to refuel on custom pizza and brews.
