Helvetia, West Virginia
Sponsored by the Helvetia Fair Association and the WV Mountain Trail Runners
Welcome to the 11th running of the Helvetia 10k Mountain Run. The race is held in conjunction with the 94th Annual Helvetia Fair. More information on Fair activities below.
In 1998 Jody and Dan Lehmann with the help of friends and neighbors organized this event in their small mountain community of Helvetia. It was their first attempt at race directing. The run and walk has never outgrown the village but continues to bring about 70 runners to enjoy the simple beauty of this spot in southern Randolph County. All proceeds go to benefit the Helvetia Community Fair Association.
The Courses
The 10k run is a challenging mix of paved road, dirt road and mountainous trail. The course follows a portion of the route the original Swiss settlers used when first coming to the area in October 1869. You will be crossing creeks and enjoying beautiful views. The first 2 miles are flat along the banks of the Buckhannon River. The next 2.5 miles climb 750 feet along Upper Trout Run to a scenic hilltop. The last 1.7 miles quickly descends Zumbach Road back to Helvetia.
The 2 mile walk starts immediately behind the 10k and follows the same route to the 2 mile mark.
In 2005 we had the first Kids Fun Run for ages 10 and under. It was a blast seeing the young runners put their toes to the line. We will surely want to do this again. This race starts at the same location as the 10k. The 1/4 mile course will turn left on Gruber Road, then left again past the Cheese Haus, over to the Museum, across Troll Bridge and to the finish. All participants will receive a Finisher Award. There is no fee, but parents must complete a registration form for their child. You may pre-registration for your child or register on race day. T shirts can be purchased for $10.00.
For the 10k there will be water stations at 2 & 4.5 miles. Split times at 2 miles. At the finish you will be treated to some fine Helvetia home baked cookies and muffins, fresh fruit and drinks. The Helvetia 10k is well known for it’s cool T-shirts and post race treats, so come join the fun. You may not set a 10k PR, but we bet you’ll have a personal best time!
The 2 Mile Walk is non-competitive. It starts right behind the 10k runners and follows the same course. Dogs on a leash and strollers welcome.
There will be give away prizes for registered runners and walkers.
The Helvetia 10k Mountain Run is part of the 2008 Mountain State Trail Run Series
