WVMTR members took 4 of the top 11 spots at Capon Valley 50K this weekend in Yellow Springs WV. Blazin Bill Young came out of retirement, shaved his head and took 4th place overall in 4:36.
His older and more wiserest cuzin Bill Potts and his side kick Boston Bobby Gillanders took turns carrying one another over a wet and soggy course and tied for 8th. Tucker County’s finest, Randy (my smarter cuzin) Young held it together in the heat and humidity of Hampshire County to finish 11th.

A hardy crew put in a good days work clearing winters debris from 12 miles of South Prong, Roaring Plains and Flatrock Trails this past Saturday. The newly established Roaring Plains Wilderness will no more hear the buzz of the chainsaw, but the crosscut and axe did a fine job. Chainsaws of course can still be used on trails outside the wilderness. Many thanks to Jen Lipscomb, Randy Young, Kelley Young, Jody Lehmann, Steve Hite, Brain Masney and Joel Wolpert.

The Wild Monongahela Act that created the Roaring Plains West and Dolly Sods North Wilderness Areas was passed by Congress in March 2009 and signed by President Obama in April. The legislation contained language that assures the continuation of the Highlands Sky Trail Run through these protected areas. Highlands joins such runs as the Western States Endurance Run in CA and the La Luz Trail Run in NM as races within the boundaries of designated wilderness. We appreciate the support of Congressman Nick Rahall and staff, the WV Wilderness Coalition and the WV Highlands Conservancy.

It has been a long winter and finally spring is here. The Dirty Dog 15k Trail Run was a big success last year with over 130 registered runners and canines.
I am making a last minute plea for volunteers. Aid Station #3 needs a volunteer or two. If you have a four-wheel drive vehicle and like to get it dirty this job is for you.
The details:
What: “Sixth Annual- Dirty Dog 15K Trail Run”
Where: Shelter #6 at Kanawha State Forest
When: Saturday, May 16, 2009
Time: 8:00 AM Volunteer Check-in
How Long: 4 to 5 hours
I guarantee it will be a great day in the woods for everyone involved. The runners will be a delight and fun to watch. If you
can help please call or e-mail me. (304-741-3531 or dantoddruns@gmail.com) If your curious about the race and want
more information checkout the Dirty Dog website. Please help the Dirty Dog be a great success by volunteering!
Sincerely,
Daniel Todd

The MD contingent of WVMTR is doing a training run on the first half of the Highlands Sky course on Saturday, May 16th. If you’d like to join us, contact Michelle at michellemprice@verizon.net. We’ve reserved one of the group sites at Seneca Shadows so we’ll be camping Friday and Saturday nights if folks want to join us for the whole weekend. So if you aren’t doing MMT or Dirty Dog, come on out and play in Dolly Sods!
