Frozen Sasquatch Trail 50k/25k

Frozen Sasquatch Trail, a new race on a familiar course. Kanawha State Forest outside Charleston is not necessarily known for deep snows, but in January you can expect anything. Race Director Mike Dolin has put together your first ultra of 2010. Come chase the Sasquatch.
what is the overall elevation gain/loss on the 50K race?
What lodging is recommended?
Heather, for the 50k course there are 6 climbs that total about 3500′ of climb, with some rolling trails between. The loss of elevation is about the same. If you are familiar with the rattlesnake 50k also held at Kanawha State Forest, this race is not as hilly.
As for lodging, the park is approx. 7 miles south of charleston, so there are plenty of hotels to choose from. Of course ive never stayed at a hotel since i live here, but ive heard the Holiday inn express or Hampton Inn at southridge is nice.
Great thanks for info. We are contemplating this one. We have the Terrapin Mountain 50k in March and the Promiseland 50k in April so this may be a good training run.
Can you tell me a little about the shelter house. My wife may be hanging out there during the 50k event. closed/open? fire pit or not? whould you need help with anything?
Yeah, she could hang out at the shelter, there is heat of some sort. Also, at aid station 2(6 also for 50k) there is a shelter with a fire pit. She could swing around there after the start and stay warm, and help out if she’d like.
Thanks. My registration will be in the mail the next few days. T
Greetings!
Just signed up a few minutes ago. I’ll be doing this Ultra a week prior to my deployment to Afghanistan. I’m excited !
Quick question: My family will be coming along for support, including our 4yr old Lab (Max) if possible. any objections with you all? the park? He’s a tremendous runner but would stay with my wife and son. Is this doable?
Thanks a bunch!
Happy Holidays!!
Adrian,
Glad to see you signed up, and appreciate what your doing for our country.
No problem with you bringing Max along, he can cheer you on.
See ya in January
The park is very dog friendly. You will probably have other dogs there to keep Maz company. You guys come on down and we’ll give you a great send off with a great run.
Hey, what time did everyone else get back yesterday? I drove down to get my shirt and gloves out of the truck, came back, waited another 10 minutes or so, and still didn’t see anyone. Since I told my wife I’d be back between 12 and 12:30, and I had no cell phone coverage to tell her I’d be late, I thought I better go ahead and leave- sorry I couldn’t stick around! Hey, thanks for organizing the run, although even though I ran a lot slower than I planned, that wiped me out enough to realize, I might have to wait until next year, I’m sure not in shape to take that on right now! Good luck to you guys!
I think we got back around 1:00, We all pretty much finished at the same time. It’s ok you could’nt stick around, Thanks for coming out, I was’nt expecting nearly that good of a turnout. Awesome run.
Mike
Thanks for putting together the run on saturday. It was alot of fun.
Do you have a idea how many goodie bags you will need? My boss is on board for help in anyway you need.
Thanks again
Brian
I have 43 registered, I would think between 60 and 75 to be safe.
May need to rethink those numbers. I see registration has really jumped this week. 45 for the full and 34 for half it looks like now. WooHoo!
Just signed up. First time running this type of trail, this time of the year. Will I need special running shoes for the trail?
Steve, it could be a little slick in some sections, so some trail running shoes with descent tread would be a good idea. Just try not to wear road shoes. See ya there.
Whats the latest to register for the event? Is there race day registration?
Registration closes on December 19th with no race day registration.
The last post and the website say registration will close on December 19th, but the registration link on the website says registration is closed. I did not see a limitation on runners in any of the information. Is registration open?
Yeah, I saw the same thing. Went to register this morning, but link closed.
Can you still register?
Thanks.
Say it ain’t so! My wife and I were hoping to do our first ultra in a few years at this one…we ran it twice in its previous incarnation. We were waiting to see how our long runs went this weekend to sign up…she had a good 20 miler yesterday and I did mine today…went to sign up and it said it was closed. Please let me know if anyone drops out or you’re able to squeeze in a couple more runners!
I am so bummed that the race is full. I had wanted to do this for a year. I just got my registration out late. Bummer!!!
I was wondering if there are finisher medals? I see there are several sponsors; are there going to be goodie bags? I love all the race goodies, can’t wait to see the shirts! Looks like there might be some snow on the ground… I am really looking forward to this race, it will be my first 25k and first trail race over 10 miles! Thanks!
Matthew Houseknecht
matt, there are finishing awards, and they are unique.
Hope you like em.
As for the goodie bags, there will be some goodies, and some random prizes given. I have inov8 posted as a sponser, but i dont think they are gonna come through, I was hoping to give away a few pair of shoes.
Weather looks to be shaping up after the blizard we had saturday.
Did your race reach runner capacity?
Yep, and a few extras
Thanks for the reply. I am going to be in town over the holiday and thought about getting a trail run in but I guess i was a little late.
I might be able to volunteer if you need any. Let me know, I will be staying about an hour or so north in Williamstown and will need to make arrangements.
Any word on trail conditions at the state forest since all the snow came in? I heard probably rain over Christmas, which will speed the melt. Will someone be posting a trail report as race day gets closer?
Thanks, y’all! Looking forward to the big run!
Jamie, Im off tomorrow, so im gonna run and check out some trail, and take my chainsaw (although i prob. shouldnt run with it..:p)
I’ll let you know of trail cond. tomorrow.
How are the trail conditions thus far? I am thinking YakTraks for the race? Maybe a flare so you can find me should I fall into a snow drift?
Run Happy
Mr/Mrs run happy,
the local park i run at here in chucktown has a bunch of trees broken from the heavy snow.
I’ll go check the race course tomorrow and let u know.
flair may be a good idea, i hear sasquatches are afeared of fire.
Is this fun or what. Here we are two days before Christmas and we are worried about snowflakes and branches on some paths through the woods. The first Sasquatch may be very memorable, wading snow, sliping and sliding. It will be fun no matter what! Mike you better move all those broken tree tops.
Hey Dan;
Run Happy here, Marianna. Just checking what to expect. No worries I am looking forward to catching Mr. Sasquatch, loving him and holding him and calling him George. Assuming I can get out there, I will be there for the race. I love falling down snow/ice covered trails, laughing “ha ha ha” all the way.
Run Happy
Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!
Worried? Heavens no! Just need to decide on crampons, gaiters and overshoes, not to mention toe heaters and need for duct tape….
If there’s worry involved, it’s only concern about icy road conditions getting to the race – wouldn’t want to get shut down from good, cold trail time because of nasty roads, would we?
See y’all Saturday, and thanks for the trail condition reports and to all of you hearty souls who are up there clearing tree messes!
OK, i didnt get to clear any brush today, but it got 50 degrees and a lot of snow melted.
Maybe we wont have a foot of snow after all.
Now i have to go eat an entire PECAN PIE.
Mike,
I was out running the course the week before the snowstorm, only major tree down was on Beech after the first climb before the rocky section. I am going out today for a 1 loop. Will keep you posted.
Mike,
Ran the whole loop today. You know what’s on the right side of the road. On the other side, there’s a tree within sight of the shelter at Johnson Hollow that could be cleared with a chainsaw. There may be one more up Johnson a little way, I can’t remember.
There’s a huge tree down at the ramp on Middle Ridge Trail, but only the trunk is in the path and it’s easy enough to climb over. You’d need a big saw to get it out, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Most of the Middle Ridge side is in pretty good shape.
sweet, thanks for the update buddy,
We cleared out the tree at the bottom of Overlook rock, and cleared a few million greenbriers. Could you tell a difference after you saw us?
Did the loop today and was very surprised with how good of shape the course is in after the past 10 days. Definitely some wet and muddy sections, but once you get up off the road most of the trails were pretty dry. Suppose to be cold Saturday, which should keep most of the trails in good shape.
OK, me and stott. just cleared out the down trees w/chainsaws. hopefully we wont get a wind or snow storm b/w now and then.
You can hope, but since it’s snowing right now, I think you might be out of luck. :p
Does Sasquatch chase you or do you chase Sasquatch??
This sounds like to much fun!
You need volunteers? I might be able to lend some assistance on race day.
Jason, I can always use volunteers. If you want to come check out the race and lend an hand or two, that would be great.
Just checked the weather….Snow with a high of 27 for saturday!
Good they raised it 7 degrees
With the weather conditions as is, and the footing questionable at best I’m betting five runners or less will break five hours for the 50k race. Anyone else care to make any predictions? Whose gonna have the third spot on the podium behind Grossman & Cassidy?
I’d put money on that Stottlemeyer guy, I saw him eyeballing some of the shorcuts Saturday when we were clearing the trail.
That’s funny! Stottlemeyer pulling a “Rosie Ruiz” at the Frozen Sasquatch……Actually that could be done on middle ridge trail, but trail runners are an honest breed….especially the ultrarunner variety…..I’m still waiting on the other podium pick…What about the women?
Well, i dont know alot of the 50k women, but i know Megan Sheurger is pretty dang fast….She did run a 1:21 at the dirty dog.
What do you think?
