At 6:30am, as preparing to leave to setup for the Helvetia 10k Run, I received a call from Alan Doss. He wanted to relay the gradual improvement in Robin’s condition. He also wanted pass on their thanks for all the good wishes they have received. Alan and Robin planned to be running with us this Sunday morning in Helvetia, but fate had something else in mind. They hope to be with us next year. Below is a note I got later in the day.

Robin’s condition has improved again. At 5:00 p.m. Saturday, September 12th, she was removed from the ventilator and is breathing all on her own. After 7 full days this is the best news yet. She is still being fed through a feeding tube and has a hard time swallowing – but remains pleasant and is able to smile. Words are mouthed, but mostly unintelligible. We are all so thankful but remain realistic and are looking at long-term rehabilitation.
On behalf of Robin and her children, I would like to thank the members of the Wheelers, WVMTR, Robin’s co-workers and clients for their concerns, thoughts and prayers during this stressful and difficult time. The calls, emails, and “well-wishes” have been uplifting and overwhelming!
I would especially like to thank Mary and Bill Shultz for being there from day one, and for being “my voice”. Also, Dr. Norm Montalto for attending to Robin at the scene of the accident and for his calls and follow-up visits at the hospital. I’LL NEVER FORGET!!
Lastly, for those 22 members of the Wheelers who were on the ride that day – despite my actions, or rather “inactions” at the time of the accident: KNOW THIS: I quickly got my act together and I’m staying strong for Robin and her children. We are ALL taking care of business – both at the hospital and Robin’s home.
Thanks to all for the support. We hope to see you on the roads and trails!

Our friend Robin….With each day, comes a slight improvement.
Today they removed the “bolt” from her head that was helping to relieve the pressure and also the main breathing tube she has had since Saturday. She is breathing mostly on her own now aided only by a smaller tube. By the end of the week we hope to report even more progress as they continue to wean her off the meds to allow her to remain awake longer. She is very fortunate to have had no other injuries to her body and because she is in such excellent physical condition, the healing may be a little faster.
I have placed in her room a “healing journal” for those who visit to write their well wishes in. It should be on the table next to the outside window OR in the top right hand drawer. If time allows, please read aloud to her the comments others have written along with your own. This verbal stimulation is what she needs at this time and it will become a legacy reminder of how much her family and friends really care for her ~ perhaps even those who don’t really know her that well.
She is in bed #12 of STICU at CAMC General and right now they will only allow visitors at a time. Visiting hours are:
11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
9:00 p.m. -11:00 p.m.
I will continue to check on her and will bring you any updates as they become remarkable.

I recieved the note below from Mary Schultz today regarding our friend Robin from Logan, WV.
DL
During the Saturday club ride on September 5th, Robin Weiner hit a pothole, crashed and sustained a severe head injury to the left side of her brain and is currently in the CCICU at Charleston General Hospital. For medical purposes, she has been placed in a drug induced coma and her condition is listed as critical, and will remain that way for 72 hours. As this time, visitors are limited to family only, however, we will monitor her progress and let everyone know via email updates.
Please keep Robin, Alan and the family in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this unfortunate event.
A follow-up email came this evening;
There has been a slight improvement in Robin’s condition as of Tuesday evening. She is still in CCICU and still being sedated. Hopefully as her condition continues to improve, they plan to cut back on the sedation, to allow her to stay awake for longer intervals as they assess her injuries.
On a bright note, she was able to wave goodbye when I visited this evening! We will continue to update you on her condition as the week progresses.
Alan and her family appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.
Mary

The 12th (I can’t believe it’s 12 years) running of this challenging 10k is coming up Sunday September 13, 2009. It is always a fun day and even “funner” if you come on Saturday to partake in the Fair Weekend festivities.
Details Here.
