Over the last 10 months I’ve taken several thousand images of athletes at local races for iplayoutside.com. Taking photos at events keeps me in contact with the group that I love being around even though I haven’t been running much at all. Some of my favorites images have come from the ultras hosted by WVMTR. Hiking in to a good location to shoot allows me to take in some scenery that you can’t see unless to get out there. I’m not a big fan of the flies that seem to find me after standing still for 30 seconds. At Highlands Sky and the WV Trilogy I felt like Pigpen from the Peanuts surrounded by a cloud of dirt and the flies.

My favorite image from the Trilogy was this picture of Dan and Kat giving the race briefing prior to the 5K and half marathon. These guys and Adam had put so much effort into organizing this epic event and they were almost finished.

This is where I set up to take pictures of the 50M runners. It was a long wait between runners.

This is the sunset I viewed from the hillside. The darkness zaps your motivation when you are headed for the finish.

This is a view of where I slept under the stars and that is Spruce Knob in the background.

A view in the other direction.

This creek side trail brought runners to the last aid station before Cardiac Hill.

I loved how this runner waited for her competitor about 150 yards from the end so they could sprint to the finish line.

Don’t ask me how I got this effect. I added the vinetting but the blurred effect came out of the camera.

Finally – ‘runnin with the devil’

I lied. Here is one more from the peak of Spruce Knob.

Dan and I enjoyed the beauty of early spring on Spruce Mountain yesterday during a reconnaissance trip of the WV Trilogy course. I was once again reminded of how special this event is going to be. In a run of a mere 20 miles we were treated to amazing views, residual snow drifts, various casualties of winter, awesome trails, and some invigorating stream crossings. This area never ceases to impress and amaze me.

Entrants are starting to roll in for the Trilogy. Be sure not to miss out. . . unless you are not man/woman enough to tackle all that is the WV Trilogy.

Mark your calendar for the WVMTR 8th Annual Camp and Run Weekend. This club run was our first organized group run and the weekend continues to be a great get together. Traditionally, this event was held at Seneca Rocks with a run of the North Fork Mountain Trail. Last year Bradley Mongold and Adam Casseday’s epic run of the Allegheny Trail took them through Pocahontas County and Watoga State Park. Someone suggested that the club host the Annual Club Camp and Run weekend at Watoga, and the idea stuck. So this year we’re mixing things up!

Make your reservation early. We are limited to 70.

This year come to Watoga State Park to meet old and new friends, run on portions of WV’s Allegheny Trail, tube the Greenbrier River, fish for trout, bike on the rail trail, and enjoy a great potluck post run feast. There are lots to do for everyone, runners and non-runners. Hope to see all you new members out there! Watoga State Park‘s 10,100 acres are located in the mountains of Pocahontas County just 14 miles south of Marlinton, West Virginia.
