Umstead 100 Mile Race Report

Published by Kimba under Ultra, Running

Short version: I had a very good race. 28 hours 44 minutes.

Andrew

Longer version: I was not very enthusiatic about this race. I was undertrained for it. My long run for it (as I joked) was my DNF at 80 miles at Rocky in early February. Since then, I had gotten a 18 mile, a 50K, and a 26.4 mile in as long runs. So I just wasn’t feeling all that confident, and really didn’t want another DNF at the 100 mile distance.

The Umstead Endurance Run is both a 50 mile and 100 mile race though. You can always drop down to the 50 mile distance (or drop anywhere after 50 and will still get credit for the 50 mile race) which is both good and bad. Good, in that you get something to show for your efforts; bad in that there is the temptation to stop.

Highlands Sky 40M Trail Run

The West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners present the 6th annual Highlands Sky Trail Run.Bradley Mongold

The event is centered at the Canaan Valley Resort State Park. The point to point course traverses Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in West Virginia. Dolly Sods is an area of high elevation, windswept plains ranging from 2500 to 4700 feet elevation. Trail terrain varies from woodland paths, rock and boulder, to upland bogs, through northern hardwoods at lower elevations, to Red Spruce and heath barrens above 4000 feet. Canaan is the highest large valley east of the Mississippi. The Valley creates the headwaters of the Blackwater River and has a unique environment composed of wetlands and uplands with vegetation characteristic of more northern latitudes. WVMTR is a permittee of the Monongahela National Forest.

Complete information can be found at the Highlands Sky 40M Trail Run site.

Potts, Finkle, Lehmann - 2007 Hellgate 100K Finishers

Published by Daniel Todd under Ultra, Running

On December 8th Bill Potts, Jay Finkle and Dan Lehmann tackled the Glenwood Horse Trail during David Horton’s Hellgate 100K. This is 4th leg of the Horton Slam and by far the toughest. Both Jay and Dan are multiple year finishers and after crewing for several year Bill decided to tackle the course for himself. I think Bill needs to stick to the cold weather events, because his 2nd place master finish at this years 100K speaks volumes. Bill documented the race with an open letter to Dr. David Horton and two videos -

Bill’s blooper reel:

Dan’s fifth finish of Hellgate:

See all Bill’s videos in his on YouTube channel.

WVMTR Results:

William Potts - 13:56:37
Jay Finkle - 16:11:24
Dan Lehmann - 16:51:35
