Laneville, WV

Here it is November 2007 and the winter snows are on their way. Hopefully March 29 will see the beginnings of spring in the high country. Once again we will do this Rite of Spring run on the first half of the Highlands Sky course.

We will meet at the Laneville Wildlife Cabin at starting point of the Highlands Sky race. There will be two distance options, 14 or 21 miles. The 14 miler will do the first 2500′ climb and 1800′ descent to the South Fork of Red Creek and then take FS 19 back to the start. The 21 miler will add the second 1200′ climb to Red Creek Plains and then to FS 19 back to the start. Both will end back at the Wildlife Cabin. You can check out the course at Highlands Sky Course Maps .

Weather can be very unpredictable on Roaring Plains. Bring appropriate clothing. This is not an easy run, but it is beautiful and will give you a feel for the Highlands course.

Directions
From Davis proceed south on Rt. 32. Pass entrance to Canaan Valley State Park and go 1 mile, turn sharp left on East Laneville Road and continue 5.8 miles to a gray metal bridge. The Start is just across gray metal bridge.
From Harman proceed north on Rt. 32. At 4 miles turn right on Bonner Mt. Rd, go 5 miles and T into Laneville Rd, turn right. Go 1.3 miles to gray metal bridge.

Please let me know if you are coming Dan Lehmann.

The 4th Annual David S. Hypes Memorial 5 Mile Trail Run & 5k Walk

Published by WVMTR under Running, WVMTR Runs

Summersville, West Virginia

Family and friends, students and teachers, runners and walkers are coming together in honor of David Hypes. Coach Hypes lost his battle with ALS, more commonly know as Lou Gehrig’s Disease on April 9, 2005. As a youngster David was involved in every athletic team he could find. At Nicholas County High School, he focused on his love for wrestling. He continued that love affair during his years at West Virginia University and returned to Nicholas County as a teacher and coach in 1985. David was an inspiration to the students of Nicholas County. We would like to continue to honor his love of education and athletics by establishing a scholarship fund in his name. So come for the Second Annual David S. Hypes Memorial 5 Mile Run or 5 Kilometer Walk in honor of David. It will be a good run/walk for a great cause.

The West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners are coordinating this event.

All proceeds will go to establish the David S. Hypes Scholarship Fund.

Course Description:
Both the 5 Mile and 5k will start the The Gym fitness center on West Webster Road 150 yards east off Rt. 19 in Summersville. The course is asphalt for the first 1/2 mile to Muddlety Creek Trailhead. The rolling single and double track trail follows the scenic Muddlety Creek as it tumbles and falls on its way to Summersville Lake. After crossing two footbridges the course climbs as it nears Aid Station #1. Here the walkers turn around and follow the same trail back. Runners proceed on to Fisherman’s Trail that descends steeply to the shore of Summersville Lake. The trail follows the shoreline for about 1 mile and then climbs back up Muddlety Creek to Aid Station #2. The challenging run will finish with a 1/2 mile uphill finish!

There will be water and sports drink offered at two aid stations along the course, and fruit, cookies and other goodies will be waiting for you at the finish.

Registration:
Participants must complete an entry form. There is a $15 entry fee. All pre-registered runners/walkers are guaranteed a T- shirt. There will be some shirts available for race day registrants, but size and quantity cannot be guaranteed. Here is the link to the printable Entry Form. Race day registration will be from 12:00 noon to 1:30 near the start at “The Gym”.

Awards:
Runners awards will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall female and male, and to 1st and 2nd female and male in the following age groups; 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and over. The walk is non-competitive but all will receive a personal sense of well being and knowledge they are supporting a worthy cause.
