Appalachian Crossing
Appalachian Crossing
A Run of Days
Traversing the Eastern Continental Divide
2nd Running September 3-6 , 2009
Not a race, but a journey. The idea for a multi-day run began in 2004 and finally came to fruition in 2007. The dream was to run across West Virginia’s formidable mountains from west to east. Runners would cover roughly 30 miles a day with two aid stations to refuel. On August 30, 2007 an intrepid group of 15 headed up Cheat Mt following a guide map and route description on an unmarked course. With the steady help of friends to crew, we made the first Appalachian Crossing. The days shared on this journey became an unforgettable experience for all.
From the beginning there was no firm plan to make this an annual event. Indeed the initial intentions were for a one time adventure. The planning and commitment needed for runners and crew is substantial. However several of those who had the opportunity to run in 2007 soon volunteered to crew should we do it again. A few have expressed an interest in running the Appalachian Crossing 2009, so you too make your plans for the adventure.
The course begins in the Tygart Valley River watershed in Randolph County and heads east over the ridges and valleys to the waters of the Potomac River. The run will not be easy, will have only limited aid and will test your navigational skills. This is a club run open to WVMTR members with ultra running experience. If this sounds the least bit intriguing please read on.
