West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners

The Fourth Annual David S. Hypes 5 Mile Trail Run and 5K Walk was held on Sunday, May 5, 2008.  89 Walkers and Runners turned out for the event.  Richwood High School standout runner Dustin Wood blazed the trail with a time of 29:02.  He breathlessly crossed the finish line with a big smile on his face. Wood has already signed to run at Glenville State College in the Fall but his focus right now is on the State Track Meet later this month.  Close behind Wood was up and coming runner and Richwood Middle School student Andrew Shaffer.  He finished with a time of 31:46.  Teammate and Richwood High Junior Jesse Hammonds rounded out the top three with a time of 33:12.  All three boys stayed at the finish line to cheer other runners in. 

Newcomer to the area Jessica Toth of Oak Hill, West Virginia, came in first overall women with a time of 40:16.  “I was running on pure adrenalin.” Toth said.  Who recently took up running.  “I’ve been running the trail during my lunch breaks to get out of the office and enjoy fresh air.  But I never thought I would win.”  Rounding out the top three were Richwood Middle School Coach Lynn Sommerville with a time of 47:27 and Lori Nutter of Mount Lookout place 3^rd overall women with a time of 51:11

Each year the run raises money for the David S. Hypes Scholarship fund which grants two scholarships for graduating seniors.
