WVMTR Camp Run Party Thing 2011

Published by

This year is the 10th anniversary of this gathering.

We will run and celebrate on and around Spruce Knob and Seneca Creek

July 29-31, 2011

On June 14, 2002 a small group met at Seneca Rocks to camp and run the 25 mile North Fork Mountain Trail. This was six months before the WVMTR officially formed. We continued to gather for several years to run North Fork until 2009 when we decided to visit other sweet places. It was Watoga State Park in 2009  and in 2010 we hit Coopers Rock State Forest. This July 29-31 weekend we’ll head back to the Mon National Forest  and the Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area.

The Spruce Knob area has an extensive network of beautiful trails. This is the location of our new club race the WV Trilogy. There are several loops of varying distance we can run from the campsite or with a short shuttle. There are good trail maps that I will have available.

The Gatewood Group Campground, previous site of the Gatewood Firetower, near Spruce Knob Lake has been reserved. The road labeled PubRd 131 on the google map is more precisely gated Forest Service road 131. There will be a WVMTR sign on the unlocked gate. If the gate is closed, close it behind you.

This place is well off the main road. If you plan to roll in Saturday morning you’d best get an early start.

Friday
– Plan to arrive Friday afternoon/evening July 29.  If you get there early enough, say 5pm, we’ll do a short run on the Gatewood Trail. We’ll have some pasta and salad ready.

Saturday – Run will start 8:00am. There are several loop options that we’ll talk about Friday evening. I will have a few routes planned from 10 miles to 25 miles. All will require a short drive from the campground to a trailhead.

We will have a feast back at the campground.  Barbecued chicken, hamburgers and veggie burgers will be on the menu. Please bring a covered dish, snacks, dessert, beverage or you favorite whatever for the dinner table.

The campground is very basic,  hand pump well water and  vault toilets. No hot showers this year so bring your solar shower or plan to jump in the creek.

The 1 mile road up to Gatewood Group site is steep. They cautioned me that rv’s would have trouble on the loose gravel. If you have a small popup with a 4wd you probably won’t have problem????
