Babcock Gristmill Grinder Half Marathon - April 14
The first race of the 2007 Series had to deal with our usual unpredictable, faux spring April weather. But it was still a good day to be running in the woods. Actually the climate during the 13 mile cruise through beautiful Babcock State Forest was quite pleasant, just the pre and post race atmosphere was a bit damp and chilly. The hot chocolate helped keep that at bay. The course was well marked and in good condition. Several return runners posted swifter finishes over last year. Amazing how a few missing degrees can encourage one to pick up the pace. See Joel Wolpert’s report below for more race details.
Big Bear Lake 20k next Saturday at the top side of the State ……see you there.

Big Bear Lake 20k - April 21
The inaugural Big Bear Lake 20k a had a lot to offer, a great venue, very runable course, and even though there were a few lingering junks of snow around this day was beautiful. The sky was bright and clear and wood smoke from campfires lingered in the air. Race Director Heather Parks described the course as rolling with some single and double track sections. She mentioned one “gnarly” (that’s mountain biker for rocky and technical) downhill section. I thought she said it was before the aid station at mile 5 so when I got to the water stop I thought “well that wasn’t too gnarly or technical”. But then later around mile 8 we descended a moderately steep section with a switchback that ended with running down a stream channel for a short way……it was a nice running section, but would have been crazy on two wheels! Tomorrow the mountain bikers take to the same course for the Big Bear Lake Bike Classic.
The next WVMTR Series race will be the Dirty Dog 15k in Kanawha State Forest on May 19. Dogs not necessary, but are very welcome. There are still 5 races in the Series, plenty of opportunity to jump in there.

Dirty Dog 15k Trail Run - May 19
In the cool, green of Kanawha State Forest 132 human runners and 31 canine runners Hit The Trail for the 4th Annual Dirty Dog. The anxious excitement of both classes almost drowned out Race Director Daniel Todd’s pre-race announcements. A new course this year eliminated the 1 mile road section at the start in trade for some fine single track trail on Middle Ridge. But sufficient attention was paid and at the end of the morning both human and dog set new course records.
Jason Bryant of North Carolina set a new course record running 1:04:20 besting the previous record of 1:06:01. Michael Bee was right on Bryant’s heels to finish 2nd at 1:04:33. Bee bettered his 2006 time by almost 4 minutes! Young Jacob Malcomb took 3rd with 1:05:17. The Dog just keeps getting faster. Eileen O’Niell, Megan Schuerger and Robin Weiner also ran a very competitive Dog. O’Niell pulled ahead of Schuerger and Weiner in the initial climbs. On the steep White Hollow climb Weiner moved into second place and carried it to the top of the mountain. Then a wrong turn on Middle Ridge caused her to fall back to third. Schuerger running strong and steady almost picked up the leader O’Neill. Eileen took 1st with 1:23:24, Megan with another very close 2nd ran 1:23:33, and Robin 3rd crossing the finish at 1:27:48.
The dogs seemed to be having a great running day too. Four legged Jack Gibbs with his running partner Randy Gibbs bettered his own finish from 2006 setting a new dog course record of 1:10:49. Bow Wow…Ow as Dennis would say!
If you care to write a race report I’m sure we’d enjoy reading it. Otherwise we’ll see you in September for the first of the four fall trail races. The Mountain State Trail Run Series is still wide open with Helvetia, Mountwood, Valley Falls and New River runs ahead.

Helvetia 10k Mountain Run - Sunday, September 9
The 10th running of the Mountain Run continues to bring old and new friends together in our small community. A small contingent of 20 or so arrived during the day on Saturday to take in the fair activities, go for an afternoon run and sit around the campfire at Lehmann’s. Race day 5:30am brought clear, starry skies and a thin sliver of waning moon. A perfect running day again.
At 8:45 thirteen young runners toed the line for the Kids Run. The gleaming, but serious faces of these 3 to 10 year old runners was an inspiration for the Big Kids race to follow. It was a short course and all finished happy and tired. They will be running the 10k before we know it.
There were 68 starters for the 10k Mountain Run this year. Joel Wolpert, Larry Taylor and Danny Fink jumped out for an early lead. By mile 2 Wolpert had pulled ahead and led by better than a minute. Joel crossed the finish at 36:24 bettering his 2006 time by 35 seconds. Taylor and Fink rounded the corner at mile 2 to start the 2.5 mile uphill with Larry leading by 15 seconds. I don’t know how it went from mile 2 to 6, but at the Mile 6 marker Taylor still led by 10 yards. Larry held the lead and finished strong at 38:32 with Danny close behind at 38:35. Larry Taylor still holds the course record of 35:51.
Rebecca Schoonover ran to take her 6th win with a 49:55. Rebecca and Todd Schoonover have run all 10 Helvetia races, and this year 11 year old Mason Schoonover joined the family tradition to run an incredible 55:52 to finish 23rd overall.
Runners seem to enjoy the challenge of this tough 10k course and beauty of our small rural community. Thank you all for making the journey.
There are three races left in the MSTR Series. There is plenty of opportunity to get your 4 races in and enjoy some fine trail running. Next race is Mountwood on September 22.

Mountwood 12 Mile Challenge - September 22, 2007
The fourth running and first fall running of Mountwood just might have been the best to date. The first two years the race was just getting on it’s trail feet. Last year RD Dave Shultz experimented with adding a section around the lake. Dave turned over the Challenge to new RD Gary Pennington for 2007. Gary and crew fine tuned the course a bit more by running the loop in the opposite direction and coming up with a very nice route. The long, gentle, single-track finish was very nice. As a matter most of the 12 miles are well worn single-track mountain bike trails that are a joy to run……..except maybe for the 100 yd pampas grass jungle section. It was cool. As nice and runnable as this course is it surprises me how few runners ventured out.
The race starts with a .4 mile road section that allows front runners a little breathing room before hitting the single-track. I could see Danny Fink leading the pack with Mike Bee, Randy Gibbs, Chris Bennon, OH All Stater Katie Wieferich, and Sarah Sturgill close behind. Fink held his lead for the 12 miles with Bee and Gibbs close behind. Wieferich ran very well finishing first woman and fourth overall.
As usual about this point in the MSTR Series scores begin to evolve. With Valley Falls and New River to in October things have the potential to change. So be there or be left out!

New River Gorge-ous Trail Runs - October 27, 2007
New RD Jeff Walls and his ACE crew did a fine job with this year’s races, including a new section on the long course out Buzzard’s Roost and a winding section through a rhododendron thicket. ACE’s trail system offers some excellent single and double track running with views of the New River Gorge, however I doubt whether many racers took their eyes off the trail long enough to appreciate the scenery. The post race meal complete with microbrew on tap was great. I heard some folks even found the hot showers!
Thanks to all you runners who participated in the 2007 Series. And thank you to all the races who helped sponsor the Series as well as the Hammergel, ACE, and ZombieRunner for awards and gifts.
Watch in January 2008 for another great trail race series. In the mean time get out there and enjoy the fall and winter trails.
